The “Gold” of the Stage: John Kaufmann’s Collaborative Vision

John Kaufmann

For John Kaufmann, theatre is more than just performance – it is a laboratory for social change and personal growth. An accomplished director and performer specializing in interactive work, John has brought his innovative approach to stages worldwide, including his astronomical musical comedy “Starball”. Today, he brings that same experimental spirit to Evergreen Valley College.

John’s work explores the intersection of gameplay, improvisation, and storytelling, but he is quick to point out that the real magic happens in what the students take home with them.

“A student who performs in a play graduates with a special gold in their pocket,” John said. “They proved to themselves that they can solve problems creatively, collaborate, and stand tall in front of a crowd. This gold shines when they face life’s challenges, form new relationships, and interview for jobs.”

Donor support is the catalyst that makes these transformative experiences possible. In 2024, contributions brought the world of Shakespeare Escapes to life with professional costumes and props. In 2025, donor funding allowed the program to hire a professional lighting designer for Evergreen Stories, using light to shift the stage from a local hillside to a 1975 classroom.

By supporting these “imaginary worlds,” donors are providing real-world benefits. Whether it’s a simple set or a high-tech lighting rig, every investment helps EVC students build the confidence to say, “I can do that!” in any career path they choose.
