The San José-Evergreen Community College District Foundation proudly serves two colleges.
The Power of Resilience: Meet Ganna
After surviving the invasion of Ukraine, Ganna Zgama arrived in the U.S. with a story to tell but a language yet to learn. In just three years at City College, she mastered English, earned two degrees and landed a role with the City of San José.
Ganna didn’t just study media –she lived it. From ESL student to award-winning podcast creator, she credits SJCC for her transformation. “SJCC gave me the confidence to believe I am college material,” Ganna said. Today Ganna uses her voice to empower women and shape community narratives
From First-Gen to Future Nurse: Meet Emily
A pre-nursing student majoring in General Studies in Health Science, Emily plans to become a registered nurse in community health or labor and delivery. She is actively involved on campus as a First Stop Center ambassador, California Community Colleges community resources ambassador, and ASG senator.
As a first-generation college student, Emily initially struggled to navigate college life. Through programs like First Year Experience and EOPS, she found the support and encouragement she needed to thrive. “Their belief in you makes you believe in yourself,” she shared. Stepping outside her comfort zone, she became more engaged on campus, built confidence, and discovered a strong sense of community at EVC that continues to shape her journey.
All-American Scholar & Athlete: Meet Angelina
A Silver Creek High grad and Early Childhood Education major, Angelina Castro found her stride in the classroom and on the softball field at San Jos City College.
Thanks to wraparound resources – including one-on-one mentoring from teachers, motivating coaches, and a multitude of campus programs – Angelina overcame a learning disability to earn a 4.0 GPA and National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American Scholar honors. “SJCC helped me build confidence and a strong support system,” she said. Today Angelina is a testament to what student-athletes can achieve with the right community behind them.
Building Belonging: Meet Edgar
A first-generation, nontraditional nursing student, Edgar Jimenez Granados balanced full-time work, academics, and family responsibilities while finding his place on campus. What began as a feeling of disconnection shifted when he made the intentional decision to get involved in student leadership.
“Getting involved changed everything for me,” Edgar shared. “It gave me confidence, community, and reminded me of what I’m capable of.”
Through mentorship and meaningful engagement, Edgar rediscovered his ambition and strengthened his commitment to serving others. Today, he is preparing to bring compassionate care and positive change to his Bay Area community.
