From 1992 to 2025, Coach Debbie Huntze-Rooney was the heart and soul of the San José City College Jaguars. As she concludes a monumental 34-year career, she leaves as one of the most successful coaches in the history of California community college athletics.
Her resume reads like a master class in sports leadership: 949 career wins, 10 Coast Conference Championships, 28 Regional Playoff appearances, and five trips to the Elite Eight State Championships. But for the generations of student-athletes who passed through her dugout, Coach Huntze-Rooney was much more than a strategist – she was “Mama Jag.”
Known for instilling grit, discipline, and pride, she served as a mentor and a source of inspiration, shaping lives far beyond the chalk lines of the softball field. To Coach Huntze-Rooney, the support of athletics has always been about more than the final score; it is an essential tool for helping students excel academically and grow personally.
While the wins and titles are etched in the record books, her true legacy lives on in the culture of excellence she built at SJCC. By empowering her players to perform at their highest potential on and off the field, she ensured that the spirit of the Jaguars would continue to thrive for years to come.
