A Legacy of Care: Dr. Olivia Sanchez’s Journey to Medicine

Dr. Olivia Sanchez

For Dr. Olivia Sanchez, the motivation to become a physician was deeply personal. Growing up in San José as the eldest of four, Olivia’s resolve was forged while caring for her father during his battle with pancreatic cancer. That experience didn’t just solidify her passion for medicine – it defined her commitment to helping others.

Olivia’s path began at SJCC, where the Middle College program set the stage for her future at UC Berkeley and the UC Irvine School of Medicine. A pivotal moment in that journey was receiving the Robert Chang Scholarship, which provided more than just financial relief; it gave her the “permission” to prioritize her own academic growth.

“The scholarship allowed me the freedom to move to Berkeley and truly discover my identity,” Olivia said. While stepping away from her role as a “quasi-parent” to her younger siblings was a difficult transition, the independence allowed her to clarify her goals and focus on the rigors of medical school. “Had I not received the support, I wouldn’t have had the same space to dream and grow.”

Today, Dr. Sanchez is an OB/GYN, a wife, and a mother. Looking back on a decade of education – from the labs at SJCC to her residency – she sees each step as essential to the person and provider she is today. For Olivia, SJCC wasn’t just a starting point; it was the foundation for a life of service.
